Vanishing Ireland

Heritage Project: Vanishing Ireland – where the time of day has finely passed

Killeen’s of Shannonbridge, and other similar family-owned groceries across the country are slowly disappearing. Fewer customers and an well-educated next generation means the future of these Irish institutions is questionable. The 24-hour supermarket is taking hold all across the country and with it comes the death of old-time independent grocers. Once the backbone of the rural community, where the keys for the church or late night almonds could always be found.

“How’s your mother” has been replaced with “Hi”, as questions are no longer asked and answers are of no interest.
